Surplus Coatings was founded in 1994 as a recycler of off specification and manufacturers overruns of powder coating. In 1995 the founders of Surplus Coatings recruited Dwayne Behrens as CEO. Under the guidance of Behrens, before recycling was popular, Surplus Coatings began developing innovative uses for the material. As CEO, Behrens used his international trade and sales experience to expand avenues of business beyond the United States.
In 2001 Surplus Coatings was purchased by Dwayne Behrens as a division of Coatings by PCD, Inc. Under the new ownership, the company continues to expand its approach of recycling and develops new ways to recycle powder coatings. The company headquarters is located in Kent City, Michigan.
